Welsh Assembly Government

Welsh Assembly Government

Located in Parc-y-Llyn, Aberystwyth this new development is part of two complementary offices collectively providing over 15,500m2 of accommodation and consolidating 1200 staff for the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) and Ceredigion County Council (CCC) into two buildings.

Located on a tight site between an existing railway line and a new road the two buildings adopt sustainable elements awarding the WAG building with a BREEAM 'excellent' rating.

The design creates a central external space between the two offices, defined at two ends by the full height internal atrium space of each building. The internal atrium, incorporating link bridges at each level, allowed natural light to flood the interior and supports the passive cooling system incorporating a predominantly naturally ventilated environment with the exposed concrete soffits adopting a 'trough' design to encourage air flow.

A district biomass system also links the two buildings providing heating to both and will utilimately extend to provide services for a new school and court building. As a result the predicted low C02 output, as just over 14kg/C02/M2/annum, will position both buildings among the best energy-performing offices in the UK.
